Strassen

and its historic past

Names of some of the nine factions are historically significant, such as Hintenburg, Fronstadel, Messensee. Messensee – after which a knight’s family is named – was, as the name suggests, once a lake. According to legend, however, there is also an explanation for the origin of the name “Messensee”. It is said that there was an ancient settlement “Messa” here, which was destroyed by the Huns (Awar). This Messa must have been founded before the middle of the 2nd century BC.

It has not yet been possible to determine where this Messa may have been located. The Roman town of Messa, which according to legend had already predecessors in earlier times, was located in the area that today lies below the main road, i.e. around the hamlet of Hof. The settlement was buried by a landslide. Excavations carried out in 1931 actually brought to light the remains of walls and hypocausts of Roman origin. In 1969, a Roman milestone was found and placed in front of the town hall.
