Aguntum Roman Excavation Site

If for many decades whole armies of archaeologists come to Aguntum, then this will not come from anywhere. But this is probably due to the fact that in Aguntum not everything has been excavated yet and there is still a lot to discover.

Aguntum, about 4 km east of Lienz in East Tyrol, important Roman settlement, which was elevated to the status of an autonomous town, Municipium Claudium Aguntum, under Emperor Claudius (41-54 AD).

Further info: Its heyday was in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, destroyed several times in late antiquity; in the 5th century Aguntum was the seat of a bishop (Lavant).

Around 610 the Bavarian Duke Garibald II was defeated by the Slavs at Aguntum.

A city wall with a monumental gate system, an Italian-style atrium house and a crafts and business district were excavated. Testimonies of early Christianity are a burial chapel and a cemetery church. As late as the 16th century, ancient ruins were visible; Excavations have been taking place since the 18th century.
