The Pustertal Valley

The Pustertal is a valley name for the area between the Mühlbacher Klause (today in South Tyrol northeast of Brixen) and the Lienzer Klause.

However, there is no river “Puster”. The valley is drained in South Tyrol by the Rienz and in East Tyrol by the Drava. The watershed lies on the flat Dobbiaco field. In Roman times, the Puster Valley belonged to the province of Noricum and was a transit area with an important road. In the 6th century the area is inhabited by the Bajuwarand and thus came to the Duchy of Bavaria. The German name form “Pustertal” was first certified in 1177,

while before the name “valle Pustrissa” was in use.

Throughout the centuries, the Pustertal valley has always formed a single unit, with subdivisions: Lower Pustertal (Mühlbach to Olang), Upper or Hochpustertal (Welsberg to Strassen), Lower Pustertal (Abfaltersbach via Lienz to the national border). It was only the separation of South Tyrol after the First World War that also tore apart this scenic and cultural unity, although the separation was not made either at a natural border (watershed) or on a historical border.
