La Val Pusteria

La Val Pusteria è il nome della valle tra la Chiusa di Mühlbacher (oggi in Alto Adige a nord-est di Bressanone) e la Chiusa di Lienzano.

Tuttavia, non esiste un fiume “Puster”. La valle viene prosciugata in Alto Adige dal Rienz e nell’Adige Orientale dai Drava. Lo spartiacque si trova sul campo pianeggiante di Dobbiaco. In epoca romana, la Val Pusteria apparteneva alla provincia del Norico ed era un’area di transito con una strada importante. Nel VI secolo l’area è abitata dal Bajuwarand e così giunse al Ducato di Baviera. Il nome tedesco “Pustertal” è stato certificato per la prima volta nel 1177,

mentre in precedenza era in uso la denominazione “valle Pustrissa”. 

Nel corso dei secoli, la Val Pusteria ha sempre costituito un’unica unità, con suddivisioni anche in questo caso: Unterpustertal (da Mühlbach a Valdaora), Ober- o Hochpustertal (da Welsberg a Strassen), Niederpustertal (da Abfaltersbach a Lienz fino al confine nazionale). Fu solo la separazione dell’Alto Adige dopo la prima guerra mondiale che distolse anche questa unità scenica e culturale, anche se la separazione non fu fatta né a un confine naturale (spartiacque) né a un confine storico.
